Chatham Design Center empowers do-it-yourself homeowners

Interior designer and business owner Melinda Headrick is making it even easier for homeowners to design the home of their dreams. On Memorial Day weekend, she launched Chatham Exteriors, a retail shop devoted to outdoor furniture and accessories, which is conveniently located behind her flagship home décor store Chatham Interiors. Just a few months later, in August, she opened her latest venture: the Chatham Design Center.
Located in the Shop Ahoy Plaza along with Headrick’s other two businesses, the design center is a membership-based resource library for the do-it-yourselfer. “The internet has empowered people,” says Headrick. “People are [designing for] themselves.” The design center, she explains, is a way for homeowners to access samples and products that are usually only available to trade professionals.
When an industrious do-it-yourselfer purchases one of the three membership programs, they are immediately able to access and order from the exclusive resource library filled with products from more than 50 well-known manufacturers. Additionally, the member will also be assigned a staff “expeditor,” who will order, track, receive, inspect and temporarily store all home purchases made. “We have a whole procurement team to take care of everything for you,” says Headrick.
The one-month Bronze Membership is $500 and includes up to 10 percent off all ordered purchases; the six-month Silver Membership is $3,000, offers up to 20 percent off purchases and includes access to the design lecture series, where trade professionals educate members on home design-related topics. The Gold Membership is $5,000 and includes all of the above, plus 30 percent off purchases, two hours of in-house interior design services and scheduled access to the conference area for meetings. The design center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Membership is also open to trade professionals.
